In Morocco, you'll find coffee at every price: loose from the local roaster, packaged at the supermarket, in capsules or online. The differences are large, and the price on the label doesn't tell the whole story. Here's how to read the price of arabica coffee, and what's really behind it.

What determines the price of coffee

1. The species: arabica or robusta

Arabica grows at altitude, yields less and needs more care. So it costs more than robusta, which is more productive and hardier. Many cheap coffees are blends high in robusta. The full explanation: Arabica vs robusta: what's the difference?.

2. Origin and altitude

Coffee grown at high altitude ripens more slowly. The bean is denser and more aromatic, but the harvest is smaller. The labels SHB, SHG or Altura indicate these high-grown coffees.

3. Sorting and bean size

The best lots are sorted to remove defective beans. The grades AA (Kenya, Tanzania) or Excelso (Colombia) indicate a large bean size.

4. Rarity

Some coffees are produced in very small quantities, in a protected area. This is the case with Jamaica Blue Mountain, whose price reflects a tiny output. More details in Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee: why is it so expensive?.

5. Freshness and roasting

Coffee roasted in small batches and sold quickly costs a little more than industrial coffee stored for months. But it's the one that keeps its aroma. Our coffees are roasted in France in small batches and restocked every two months for Morocco.

Cheap coffee is often roasted darker to hide its defects: the beans are uneven and burnt.

Our prices at a glance

Range 125 g 250 g Examples
Single origins 60 DH 95 DH Brazil Santos, Kenya AA, Mexico Altura ORGANIC, Guatemala SHB ORGANIC
Rare and organic origins 70 to 80 DH 105 to 120 DH Ethiopia Moka Sidamo ORGANIC, Cuba Serrano, Sumatra Gayo ORGANIC
Exceptional crus 100 to 290 DH 155 DH (Galapagos) San Cristobal Galapagos ORGANIC, Jamaica Blue Mountain (125 g only)

We sell in 125 g and 250 g bags. For a larger quantity, simply take several bags, for example 4 × 250 g. Smaller bags also stay fresher once opened.

Comparing two coffees accurately in 5 steps

  1. Compare at the same weight. A 250 g pack at 95 DH and a 1 kg pack at 250 DH can only be compared once brought back to the same weight.
  2. Check for "100% arabica". An unspecified "blend" often contains robusta.
  3. Look for the precise origin. Country, region, even variety: the more precise, the more traceable the coffee.
  4. Check the roast date, not just the best-before date. Coffee roasted a year ago has lost most of its aroma.
  5. Be wary of very dark, oily coffees. A very dark roast often hides average-quality beans.

Our advice: work out the price per 100 g before buying. A 125 g bag at 60 DH comes to 48 DH per 100 g: it's this figure, not the price on the label, that lets you compare two packs fairly.
