It's one of the most famous coffees in the world, and one of the most sought-after in Morocco. Jamaica Blue Mountain intrigues people with its price. Does it live up to its reputation? Here's what you need to know before buying it.

A protected origin

Blue Mountain grows on the slopes of the Blue Mountains, in the east of the island. The climate there is cool and misty, the soil is rich and the slopes are steep. Only coffee grown within this defined area can bear the Blue Mountain name. The coffee is often exported in wooden barrels, a tradition that is part of its legend.

Why is it so expensive?

  • Tiny production, limited by the size of the designated area.
  • Difficult cultivation on steep slopes, with hand harvesting.
  • Very strong demand, particularly from Japan, which buys a large share of the harvest.
  • Strict quality controls before export.

Be wary of cheap "Blue Mountain blends": they often contain only a small share of the real coffee.

Its taste

Blue Mountain is prized for its smoothness and balance rather than its power. In the cup: a balanced, smooth body, notes of hazelnut and honey, subtle acidity and very little bitterness. It's a coffee for tasting, best drunk without sugar or milk to enjoy it fully.

Tip: taste the first cup black, without sugar or milk, and grind just before brewing. With a 125 g bag, it's the best way not to lose any of the hazelnut and honey notes.
