The 30-second answer
- ⏱️ Ground coffee loses its aroma fast: grinding just before brewing is the single best thing you can do for flavour.
- ⚙️ Choose a burr grinder rather than a blade grinder: the grind is even and adjustable.
- 🎚️ The shorter the extraction, the finer the grind: fine for espresso, coarse for French press.
- 🛒 No grinder? Choose the grind that suits your brewer on our coffee pages.

A coffee grinder is the accessory that improves your coffee the most, often more than a new machine. Grinding just before brewing keeps all the aroma of the bean. You still need to choose the right grinder and the right grind. We don't sell grinders, but we do sell the whole bean coffee to go with them, or coffee already ground for your brewer.
Why grind your own coffee?
Once ground, coffee is exposed to air and quickly loses some of its aroma. Whole beans keep it much longer. Grinding just before brewing gives a more fragrant cup, especially with delicate coffees like those from Ethiopia or Kenya. That's also why we recommend whole bean coffee to anyone with a grinder. Burr grinder or blade grinder?
| Blade grinder | Burr grinder | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A blade chops the beans | Two burrs crush the beans |
| Consistency | Uneven: powder and large chunks | Even |
| Grind adjustment | No (depends on time) | Yes, precise |
| Heat build-up | Higher | Low |
| Price | Low | Medium to high |
An uneven grind gives coffee that is both bitter (the fine particles over-extract) and sour (the large chunks under-extract). A burr grinder, conical or flat, is therefore the best choice whenever possible.
Manual or electric?
- Manual grinder: quiet, compact, affordable, ideal for 1 to 3 cups a day or for travel. It takes a bit of elbow grease.
- Electric burr grinder: fast and convenient for several cups a day or for espresso, which needs a fine, precise grind.
Which grind size for which brewer?
The rule is simple: the shorter the time water spends in contact with the coffee, the finer the grind should be.
| Method | Grind | Looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish coffee | Extra fine | Powder, like flour |
| Espresso machine | Fine | Fine salt |
| Moka pot | Medium-fine | Between fine salt and sand |
| Drip coffee maker | Medium | Sand |
| French press | Coarse | Coarse salt |
Rule of thumb: coffee that is too bitter or flows too slowly means the grind is too fine. Coffee that is too sour or flows too fast means the grind is too coarse.
Adjusting and cleaning your grinder
Adjust your grinder in small steps and taste after each change. Grind only the amount you need. For cleaning, never use water on the burrs: a brush or small paintbrush is enough to remove residue, which turns rancid over time.

Frequently asked questions
Which coffee grinder should I choose?
A burr grinder: manual for 1 to 3 cups a day, electric for heavier use or for espresso.
What grind for a moka pot?
A medium-fine grind, slightly coarser than for espresso. On our product pages, choose "Ground for Moka Pot".
What grind for a French press?
A coarse grind, similar to coarse salt. Too fine and it passes through the filter, making the coffee muddy and bitter.
How long does ground coffee keep?
It loses its aroma faster than whole beans: seal the bag tightly after each use and drink it within a few weeks of opening.
Can you grind coffee in a blender?
It works like a blade grinder: the grind is uneven. A proper grinder is better, or simply choose the right grind for your brewer.
