Do you have a bean-to-cup machine from DeLonghi, Philips, Krups, Jura or another brand? The choice of coffee changes everything. Here's how to get the best from your machine with the right beans.
How a bean-to-cup machine works
Whole beans go into a hopper. For each cup, a built-in grinder grinds the dose, then the machine tamps the coffee and forces water through it under pressure. The result: freshly ground coffee every time, at the press of a button.

Choosing your coffee
- Whole beans, never ground coffee in the bean hopper.
- A medium roast: very dark beans are oily and can clog the grinder over time.
- 100% arabica for a smooth, aromatic espresso. For more body, an arabica with strong character such as Sumatra.
- Fresh coffee, in bags you finish within a few weeks.

The right settings
- Grind size: if the coffee runs too fast and tastes watery, go one step finer. If it drips slowly and turns bitter, go one step coarser. Change the setting while the grinder is running, if your manual says so.
- Coffee dose: increase the dose for more body.
- Water volume: an espresso is about 30 to 40 ml. More water gives a lighter coffee.
- Maintenance: descale according to the manual, especially if your water is hard, and clean the brew group regularly.
