The 30-second answer

  • 🫘 Whole beans keep their aroma longer and give the most fragrant cup, but you need a grinder.
  • ☕ Ground coffee is ready to use, as long as you choose the right grind for your brewer.
  • ⏱️ Once opened, ground coffee loses its aroma much faster: buy small bags.
  • 🎯 Our advice: whole beans if you have a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine, otherwise the right ground coffee.

It's one of the questions we're asked most often. The answer depends on your equipment and how much time you want to spend on your coffee. Here's what really changes.

The real difference: surface area exposed to air

Grinding a bean multiplies its surface area exposed to air. The aromas, which are highly volatile, then escape much faster, and the coffee oxidises. That's why freshly ground coffee smells so strong. It's also why you need to reseal an opened bag of ground coffee properly.

Manual coffee grinder in use, freshly ground coffee
Grinding just before brewing releases all the aromas into the cup, not into the kitchen.

Whole bean vs ground comparison

Criterion Whole bean coffee Ground coffee
Aroma Maximum if freshly ground Very good in the first days after opening
Shelf life after opening Several weeks A few weeks, declining quickly
Equipment Grinder or bean-to-cup machine None
Grind adjustment Free, adjustable Fixed at purchase
Convenience One extra step Ready to use

What to choose for your situation?

  • You have a bean-to-cup machine: whole beans, no question. See Which coffee for a bean-to-cup machine?.
  • You have a grinder: whole beans, to adjust the grind and enjoy a more fragrant coffee. Our guide: Coffee grinder: which grind for which brewer?.
  • You use a moka pot, filter or French press, with no grinder: ground coffee, in the exact grind for your brewer.
  • You don't drink much coffee: small 125 g bags, so you finish them while they're fresh.

GREAT AS WHOLE BEAN OR GROUND

Colombia Excelso Organic Coffee

Rounded, light and fruity, this organic Colombian coffee is enjoyable in every brewer, from espresso to filter. A good coffee for testing whole bean against ground.

Our grind options

All our coffees are available as whole beans or ground. On each product page, choose "Ground for Espresso Machine", "Ground for Moka Pot", "Ground for Filter" or "Ground for French Press". We grind for the type of brewer you choose: there's nothing for you to adjust.

Choosing between whole bean and ground in 4 steps

  1. Look at your equipment. Whole beans need a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine; ground coffee needs no equipment.
  2. Estimate how much you drink. If you don't drink much coffee, choose small 125 g bags so you finish them while they're fresh.
  3. Choose the exact grind for your brewer. On each product page: "Ground for Espresso Machine", "Ground for Moka Pot", "Ground for Filter" or "Ground for French Press".
  4. Reseal the bag properly. Ground coffee is at its best within two to three weeks of opening, away from heat and light.

Our advice: if you can't decide, order the same coffee as whole beans and ground for your brewer, then compare the two cups over a week. The difference in aroma is quicker to taste than to explain.

Frequently asked questions

Is whole bean coffee better than ground coffee?

For the same coffee, yes, if it's ground just before brewing. That said, well-stored ground coffee drunk quickly is still very good.

Can you put ground coffee in a bean-to-cup machine?

Only if it has a compartment designed for ground coffee. Otherwise, never pour it into the bean hopper: you risk damaging the grinder.

What grind for a moka pot?

A medium-fine grind. Choose "Ground for Moka Pot" on our product pages.

How long does ground coffee keep once opened?

It's at its best within two to three weeks of opening, tightly resealed, away from heat and light.
